Another day, another project...

So, as some of you may know, I'm currently signed off work due to a problem with my spine. Whilst I've now got a lot of free time, my mobility is limited and the pain I can't spend much time at a desk, but I can do the odd bit of painting or scratchbuilding, with regular breaks. One of my long term projects was to replicate all of the original Warhammer cardboard buildings for my 'Altheim' gaming project, but with more 3d detail, and so that's what I'm up to at the moment...

The current model I'm working on is the 3 section farmhouse, as you can see here. What I'm doing is using a copy of the original building as a carcass, then adding wood frames, planking and some doors I've sculpted and cast up.

Here's a couple of buildings I've already completed:

This is the Gatehouse model, completed and ready for paint. The roof tiles on this one are laser cut cardboard, by Warbases, with the doors and windows made by me. I particularly liked the way the cut out parts with the brick textured plasticard behind worked out.

Next up was a biggie, and far more work:

This was one of the large, timber-framed houses. This time the roof is made of individually cut tiles, and took a *long* time to glue on, as well as the sheer amount of timbering.

Finally, another fairly large one:

This is the monastery from the 'Vengeance of the Lichemaster' scenario, That was in the the Spring '86 Citadel Journal:

And yes, for this one, I did use an original Citadel Journal. In fact, this was actually the studio copy, so it has both history and provenance!

In truth, this has been built since the late 80's, and sat on a shelf, uncompleted since then. It's another part of my push to actually get some projects completed, like the War Mammoth in the previous post.

I've also done a couple of smaller shacks, which you can see below:

In the long term, I think I'm going to get all thirty or so the Townscape buildings finished, and then paint them all in one go, so I can replicate finishes and have some kind of consistency to them all.

Although, knowing me, they may just end up going back on the shelf after I've done half a dozen or so!

The Enigma of Abdul Goldberg

The mysterious Abdul Goldberg, in the flesh...

So one of the Facebook 40k groups I'm a member of, 'The Emporium of Rogue Dreams', is having a competition to make a model, background and statline for 'Abdul Goldberg', a famous villain from the early Rogue Trader days. I've spent a lot of time working out how to fit Abdul into both Rogue Trader and 'current' 40k, and so here's my background fluff. Sorry, there's a lot of it, and it probably bends canon until it makes squeaking noises, but there y'go, that's just how I roll...

Abdul Goldberg

"Although most Imperium scholars agree that whilst there probably was originally a real pirate captain named 'Abdul Goldberg’, the consensus is that the name has been passed between fringe pirates as a cross between an honorary title and a method for obfuscation for millennia. There has been, however, some lingering confusion in academic circles over the eerily similar descriptions of the Pirate Abdul whenever he was actually seen; the huge frame and booming voice, the traditional Tallarn headdress, the large 'Biel-Tan' tattoo, not to mention the tired eyes that look like they’ve seen things no human should ever have seen." Fr. Arturusdomum - Liber Astrum Piraticus.

He must be just a myth, mustn’t he?

The true history of Abdul Goldberg is far, far stranger. Little is known of his very early life, save he was born on the desert planet of Tallarn in 7.080.M32, as 'Abd-El Jabal Jalid Al-Dhahabi Min Ture-Nag’. As the eldest son, once he was of age he joined the 12th Desert Raiders as tribal traditions dictated, just in time for The Cursus War.

Still in military training when the Eldar of the Biel-Tan Craftworld started their attack, he nevertheless impressed his superiors with his quick thinking, military prowess and sheer bravery from the off. Once the Black Oculus opened, and a truce was agreed with the Biel-Tan, he was rapidly promoted to Sergeant and sent out with every other available warrior to join with the Eldar and repel the Daemonic Incursion.

During this fighting he was pivotal in the success of the battle on the Human side, engaging in the classic Tallarn hit and run tactics that have made them famous, repeatedly drawing out the Daemonic forces of Chaos to weaken and then crush them. The battle reports even had him at one point engaging with and defeating a dreaded Keeper of Secrets. Unfortunately, it was during the final push for victory that he was sent completely insane whilst fighting the unimaginable warp incursions still emerging from the gate. After the battle, he was left a gibbering wreck, his mind broken and his soul wrenched from his body by the forces of Chaos.

His bravery and prowess in battle, however, impressed even the martial Eldar of the Biel-Tan, and almost uniquely they took him onto their Craftworld to allow their Seers to repair his broken mind. Placing him into psychically induced stasis, Eldar Spiritseers retrieved his lost soul, returned it to his body and repaired his shattered mind. The Eldar work to a different timescale to mere humans though, and this complex, delicate task eventually took the Seers several *thousand* years. When Abd-El was finally awakened from stasis, he found himself in M36, millennia out of time. His name was now a mere footnote in Imperium history, albeit a highly (and posthumously) decorated one; he even found himself written into Eldar war-ballads. When suitably recovered from the shock, he left the Biel-Tan Craftworld and emerged back into the Imperium, armed with a selection of beautifully crafted Eldar weapons, given with gratitude from the Militaristic Biel-Tan to the Human who did so much to help defeat the Chaos incursion. Lost in time, and with everyone he ever knew being millennia dead, Abd-El drifted the far fringes of the galaxy making his way by using his only skills, that of the soldier, joining mercenary units here and there, before eventually, almost accidentally, drifting into piracy.

It was during this time that Abd-El’s current name emerged. In Tallarn Common Cant his full name was 'Abd-El Jabal Jalid Al-Dhahabi Min Ture-Nag’, of which the Low Gothic literal translation is ‘Abdul of the Golden Iceberg, of the Ture-Nag Tribe'. A mouthful for most Imperial scholars, let alone barely literate pirate scum, Abd-El’s name eventually became corrupted down into the Low Gothic, and now infamous, 'Abdul Goldberg’.

It was in the decades following his re-emergence into the galaxy that Abd-El also found that something strange was happening to him, or more precisely not happening; he wasn’t getting older. The millennia in Eldar stasis had brought his ageing process to a standstill, and even though he was no longer in stasis, the effects were still evident. He was, to all intents and purposes, immortal.

Over the next few millennia, ‘Abdul Goldberg’ became a mix between a myth, a legend and a cautionary tale to inexperienced spacefarers. This was a state Abd-El actively encouraged, his infamy helping to pacify any unfortunates he decided to raid. As a pirate, he was harsh yet fair, only killing when the defenders made it clear they wouldn’t surrender, and when stripping captured vessels he always made sure the remaining crew had enough fuel and provisions left to make it back to a safe outpost.

Over the years, his fortunes repeatedly waxed and waned like the tides of the Warp. At one point even naming himself ‘Abdul Goldberg, Rogue Trader’ in direct defiance of the power of the Imperium, writing his own Letter of Marque, and gleefully showing it to captains of the ships he raided. At his peak, he was in command of a fleet of ships and terrorised entire planets into submission. At his lowest ebb, he scraped a living by confidence trickery and gambling, travelling alone in a battered, semi-ruined cargo lugger.  Somehow, even at his weakest he was never captured, always managing to make a daring escape at the last possible moment. Abd-El would also disband his pirate crews every few decades to avoid raising suspicion of his non-ageing, lest it be thought to be a mutation. Any taint of chaos is swiftly excised from most pirate vessels before it could gain a hold and destroy them all. If his state was discovered, it would lead to his rapid exit via an airlock at the hands of the crew, mutation or not. After hiding out on a planet somewhere for a few decades under an assumed name, he would form a new band and take up the ‘Abdul Goldberg’ moniker again.

Currently, Abd-El is just emerging from a period of inactivity, after hiding out on Jamakeer, an almost dead planet on the unfashionable outer fringes of Imperium space for the last twenty years. His sole companions at the moment consist of a pair of huge Xenos bodyguards of unknown origin, answering to El’wd and Jek. Highly intelligent and incredibly strong, they were rescued from Jamakeer’s slave pits by Abd-El, and willingly guard him with their lives.

Abdul, El-wd & Jek

Weapons & Equipment:

Abd-El is equipped with a variety of exotic weaponry picked up over the years, but by far his most prized possessions are the gifts bestowed on him by the Eldar. These consist of a Shuriken Pistol that has been exquisitely disguised as an antique blaster, a Power Sword that was forged to resemble a traditional Tallarn 'Shamshir' sword, and a specially modified Advanced Displacer Field, miniaturised and fitted into a golden wristband. Whilst this serves as a standard Displacer Field, it has two added benefits: It has been psychically melded to Abd-El's mind, meaning he can decide how far and in which direction they wish to be displaced, and secondly, it can be activated at will, also operating as a short-range teleportation device. This has been one of the reasons that Abd-El has always evaded capture, allowing him to miraculously 'vanish' in a blinding flash of light. To aid with escapes, He also carries a Jokaero Digital Needler armed with stun charges, a selection of more mundane Smoke and Knock-Out grenades, and a miniturised Digital Las-Cutter, as well as a respirator and photochromatic goggles.

Stats:

As for the model, he's a lightly converted LotR Haradrim Guard model, and his bodyguards are a couple of converted Half-Trolls. Here's a few more photos:

So, there you go, one Abdul Goldberg, ready for his next adventure!

The Heroic Defenders of La Maisontaal!

So, sorry for being quiet recently, but apart from being ill, I've been working on this little lot, which are part of the 1986 WFB 'Vengeance of the Lichemaster' scenario.

Loads more photos and info after the cut...

So, if you're still reading, here's a little background information: In the Spring '86 issue of the Citadel Journal, there was a follow-on scenario for the 'Terror of the Lichemaster' box set, created as an introduction to the Skaven, that were released to coincide with the issue. As part of it, the cover could be cut up to create a centrepiece monastery of Taal, 'La Maisontaal'. I actually cut up my cover, all the way back in 1986, but didn't get any further than sticking it on a base, and never actually played the scenario.

It was three sided, with the newly-released Skaven, the Undead from the TotL scenario, and a bunch of hapless monks of Taal. A brief outline of the story went like this:

Heinrich Kemler the Necromancer had formerly studied at La Maisontaal, and knew there were artifacts of great power stored there, and that Bagrian the Head Monk had refused to help him in the past. However, he didn't know that Bagrian had been experimenting with creating artificial life-forms (Somewhat odd for a monk of Taal the Nature God, but hey, what do I know!) To power these artificial life forms, Bagrian had broken into Skavenblight(!) and stolen the 'Black Arc (sic) of the Skaven, an artifact of immense power, currently locked into a casket. Understandably the Skaven want it back, and are in the process of attacking the Monastery when Kemler arrives with his undead army, and then it all kicks off!

Anyway, back to the project! As mentioned, I've had this terrain piece knocking around for the last thirty years, so thought I'd actually a: rebuild it, and b: finish the damn thing!

See, that's a genuine 1986 Citadel Journal!

So, to start with, I backed the card with cork tiling to give it a bit more bulk, textured the walls, and added doors, windows and tiles etc. Once painted up, I ended up with this:

I'm quite pleased with how it turned out, tbh, and I like the way the graffiti from the original turned out.

However, that's only the half of it!

I also decided to paint up the inhabitants of the monastery as per the scenario, and using period miniatures. This called for Bagrian, the Master of La Maisontaal, as well as 1 Level Three, 1 Level Two and 3 Level One Wizard Monks, and 12 Warrior Monks of Taal.

Bagrian:

Bagrian is described as wearing the Red Robes of Taal, and having implanted metal pieces into his own body, including a right hand and half of his face. I used an old Citadel Wizard for him, with his red robes showing the white hem of a Master of Taal:

Level One Wizard Monks:

These were another couple of Citadel Wizards, and a lightly converted Flagellant, in plain red robes as befits their low status:

Level Two Wizard Monk:

Again, another Citadel Wizard model, this time with a grey hem (and slightly more deranged look!) to show his higher level:

Level Three Wizard Monk:

Not sure where this figure comes from, it's either preslotta or not Citadel at all. I like it though, as he looks wild enough to be a high level Wizard:

Warrior Monks of Taal:

There should be 12 of these, but I've done 20 as I've had this unit of Disciples of the Red Redemption knocking around for years, and wanted an excuse to get them off the leadpile!

And last, but not least is Bagrian's Mechanical Life Form...

So, why a Dalek, I hear you cry? If you look *very* closely at the counter sheet provided for the scenario, the 'Mechanical Warrior' token looks suspiciously like a Dalek. I'm guessing this is no coincidence, as there were shedloads of unwanted Dalek/Cybermen sprues knocking around from the box set that no bugger bought and this might be an excuse to shift a few sprues via mail order.

So, that's the Monks of Taal sorted. I'd like to do the other two forces next; I've got enough undead to do Kemler's army, though I'll have to do some crafty conversions for the characters, as Im not paying the prices that Kemler and Mikeal Jacsen go for!

I will, however have to pick up some Skaven, as although I've always liked them as a race and an army, I've never bothered collecting more than a few over the years. So, if anyone has 40 or so '86 era metal clanrats going spare, give me a shout! ;)

Warhammer Townscape project update..

Just a short update today, but a bit of a resource for you all, if you need it. As you may know (if you read this regularly) my current main project is to recreate all of the Warhammer Townscape buildings in a more modern way, with textures and detailing. I was just getting to the stage of detailing the gatehouse, and wanted to add some of the little posters that were spread throughout the book. Part of the original charm of the book was all these little details that you could add to make your buildings a bit more unique:

A couple of posters in use. Don't try and sneak past the militia.

To that end (and to make detailing the rest of my buildings a little easier, I've gone through the book and digitally pulled all of the posters and signs out of it onto one sheet. They're just great little details that add to a fantasy building. Hopefully you think the same, and if so, they're here for you to download (after the cut!)

Just in case blogspot lowers the quality of the uploaded image, you can find a full 8mb 300dpi .png version of the file *here*

I'm also hoping I don't get an email from GW legal, it's not like it's losing them any money, I'm just effectively cutting them out for you in advance! If it is, a quick email to evo at dieselmonkey dot net will get it taken down.

Otherwise, enjoy!

Altheim invaded...

Another small update today, but as I've started on my undead army, I thought I'd put up a few of the undead I've just painted up.

The Altheim Militia face off against their resurrected former comrades.

More after the cut...

As I'm basing most of my games around my Altheim background, I decided to make my undead themed to fit in. As such, I've painted them up in the same blue and yellow uniforms of the Altheim Militia.

The undead on the march

 and again.

Figure-wise they're old citadel zombies, part of a rather large undead force I've been collecting for a very long time now! They're fantastic models to paint, very easy and look great.

I've also recently painted one of my Altheim characters, a merchant:

He's a more recent Citadel model, but he fits in perfectly with the older models, and unusually for recent GW stuff he's not covered in skulls or even armed!

Anyway, back to painting zombies for me!

The potential future. Or, yet another doomed jaunt into the wargames industry.

This is just a bit of a personal update really, though it is hobby related, so might interest a few of you. As some of you may know, I've been part of the Wargames Industry repeatedly over the last 25 years, (GW, Hetzerdog and more recently the F*undry F*ckwits). This generally ends in tears, but for some reason I just can't stay away and my burnt fingers never seem to teach me the lesson I so obviously need.

With my current spinal injury meaning I'm not at work, it's given me a lot of time to think things over. Partially about fitting a TVR V8 engine in my Land Rover it has to be said, but also about my future in general. Depending on the surgical outcome, I may never return to 100% fitness, and part of the problem is that sitting at a desk programming for long periods of time is something that I may no longer be able to do, and that puts my current job/career in jeopardy.

With that in mind, my partner and I have recently been looking at buying a laser cutter/engraver, which will work for her clothing company, and I thought of possibly starting up in a small/part time way, in the wargames scenery business to bring in some extra income.

A new toy...

Now, I do realise that the laser cut scenery business is booming at the moment, and possibly nearing capacity. However, a large proportion are companies knocking out very basic 'etched box' houses that frankly just aren't very good. There are a few notable companies (4Ground, Sarissa etc) putting out some fantastic work though, and my plan is to aim at that level, rather than the entry level stuff. Now, I know that is going to be a bloody steep learning curve, but what the hell, I could do with a challenge.

I already have small scale resin/white metal mouldmaking and casting facilities, mainly for making jewellery, but I think that a combination of laser cut buildings with resin/metal accessories would be a potentially good angle that isn't currently oversubscribed.

Fenris have already done this with their 'Griffin House' kit, and it breaks away from the traditional problem I have with laser cut scenery in that it doesn't look like a laser cut  model:

How to do laser cut scenery well

This is my issue with most of the stuff out there, it's too regular, too boxy and just too simple. Houses aren't featureless boxes, roof tiles aren't a flat surface etched on a board etc, so I'd like to think I could make far more 'realistic' buildings, both fantasy and sci-fi. My issue with the sci-fi stuff is that it's also generally too clean, and follows the Infinity style of scenery. I prefer my scenery to be a bit more 'lived in', but I guess we'll see how that works, and if anyone else would buy it!

Anyway, there you go, a bit of an update for you, so if you see my blog's not getting updated as often as it was, it's because a: I'm still struggling to paint due to health issues, and b: I'm desperately trying to learn AutoCAD!

Hey, I won something!

Ol' Abdul, In the flesh...

So, one of the better 40k Facebook groups I'm a member of, The Emporium of Rogue Dreams, recently had a competition to create a model, background story and statline for Abdul Goldberg, a recurring Hero/Villain/Adversary from the Scenario Creator in the Rogue Trader Rulebook.

If you're a regular here, you'll see I did this a while ago, *here*, and I entered it into the competition. Due to a freak current in the Warp, the organisers of the competition managed to get the ever illustrious Rick Priestley himself to judge the entries, and I'm amazed to say, I won!

Here's what the rules maestro had to say:

"Abdul Goldberg in the flesh... and what a lot of it! I enjoyed reading of Abd-El's exploits throughout time (and various editions) of the 40K background. A good effort that man! It's also a really nice conversion from an interesting source - and the two bodyguards are nicely envisaged too. It certainly ticks all the Rogue Trader boxes - and some extra just to be sure. I also liked the fact that you don't give away what he looks like... the mystery remains... mysterious"

High praise indeed! Must admit, it was nice to win something modelling related, it's been a while. The 1988 Golden Demon Awards I think, and even then I only got the a runner up prize!

I think really, after winning for me, it's only fair that I get him into a game at some point. More news on that when I paint up a pirate warband for him!

Port Imperiale update

So, regular readers will know that this blog was originally meant to be a progress log for my RT background planet, the titular Port Imperiale, but it's diverged a little from that brief over time, so for this post, I've gone back to the Port. Part of the background was that the entire planet was meant to be covered in crashed spacecraft, the remnants of the Pirates' victims that were forced to land before the ships were stripped of their cargo and anything saleable.

So, I've spent the last couple of weeks working on one of these crashed ships, and here you go, this is the first, and probably the largest one:

A squat salvager checks out his latest find

More after the cut...

This is a small 'Rover' class cargo lugger, lightly armed and armoured, and designed for fast movement of small, high value loads. These are frequently used by smugglers for transportation of illegal stims and undesirables between systems.

The ship was made to look like it had been attacked in space before being forced to land on Jamakeer. However it suffered explosive decompression on entry into the atmosphere (Hence the crew compartment being destroyed), and it plowed into the planet's surface, ripping off the wing and landing gear in the process.

Here's a couple more pics:

Close up of the port side, showing where it hit the surface.

and the starboard side, showing the damage to the crew area

Model-wise, it's made of a selection of random Forgeworld miscast bits I've picked up on eBay over the last few years (they turn up quite frequently!), along with a couple of plastic GW kits, and some scratchbuilt parts.

The next job is paintwork, and I'm not sure whether to leave it as battleship grey, or go for a commercial livery of some sort. Either way it's going to need a lot of weathering!

Crashed 'Rover' Class Cargo Lugger update..

Just a minor progress update today, As I decided I'd get the airbrush and compressor out of storage and give 'em a go again, for about the first time in 8 years.

Paint was chosen for me, as it was about the only one of my Vallejo paints that hadn't run out/dried up. I've since re-ordered a bunch of Vallejo Model Air paints, but thought yellow was a good way to go anyway:

A few more photos after the cut...

I've tried to make it look like it was shot up and damaged as it came in to crash land. The next large jobs are weathering, rust etc, which will take a while, as there's a *lot* to do on it!

Side View:

Close up of damaged wing:

Close up of the front, with a Pilot, miraculously emerging from the wreckage:

I've since decided that this won't be the largest ship in the 'fleet', as I've just finished an even larger cargo ship that I'll hopefully reveal shortly...

On a less cheerful note, I'm going to the funeral tomorrow of the guy who painted the backdrop that you see here, and that I use in most of my shots, who sadly died in an accident a couple of weeks ago.

RIP Jim, you'll be missed.

The 'Maelstrom' Class Light Cargo Lugger

$

So, as I mentioned in my last post, there's an even bigger ship on the block, and here it is, the 'Maelstrom' Class Light Cargo Lugger.

More photos after the cut...

This is by far the largest ship I've built to date, and, along with the 'Rover' class wreck I've already shown you, neatly uses up nearly all of the spare parts I've built up by buying miscasts and other assorted junk kits on eBay over the last few years.

Front View

With this one, I've gone for a ship that's landed and is in the process of being loaded/unloaded, as that suits the Port Imperiale background fluff. As you can see from the back, there's a large set of open doors, with a ramp into a huge cargo bay that takes up almost the entire ship. Armaments are minimal, so in dangerous areas it needs to run in a convoy with fighters to offer protection.

 Rear View

Parts-wise, there are bits of Thunderhawk transport in there, and most of a Caestus Assault Ram, along with bits of Storm Raven, Valkyrie, Inquisitor Scenery and even the odd bit of Ork Trukk!

I now really need to decide what colour to paint it though. I've got a large blue ship, and a large yellow one, so I really need to think of a good scheme for this one. It's meant to be a commercial transport, so ideally some sort of livery would be good.

 Other side

This last guy's a pilot I've recently painted up, he's one of the 4A range, and a nice figure. I'm particularly happy with the camo trousers.

The best used droids on Jamakeer!

So, a while ago I did a small tutorial on making some market stalls (*here*), and I've finally got around to painting them, along with some characters to staff them, so here they are!

More after the cut...

Li
Used Ro-Butler, Sir?

First up is 'Robo-Crap', Port Imperiale's finest purveyor of second hand droids, synths, and other artificial life forms:

There's cheap, and then there's junk...

The seller is a Li H'Sen Chang model from Black Tree Design's Dr Who range, and I see no reason why he can't also be Li H'sen Chang, robot dealer, on Port Imperiale.

The stall contents are made up of old Paranoia robot parts along with some sculpting dollies to make up as synths. The rest of the robots are also mainly ones from Citadel's old Paranoia range.

Next up is 'Mr Stabby', Supplier of shivs, swords, bayonets and blades to the Port's underclass.

Would you buy a used knife from this man?

The model is a lightly converted old Call of Cthulhu model with a head swap and some weapons, and I really like just how creepy he's turned out.

The stall is fairly basic, just a bunch of assorted knives from GW plastic kits from various ranges and vintages.

Finally (for the time being) we have the A1 meat company. You're really better off not asking where the meat comes from, or even what species it's from.

The owner of this stall is really just a placeholder for the time being, as he's a mildly psychotic 40k hunchback I made a while ago.

The stall has an assortment of meaty items from various plastic kits, along with a selection of writhing tentacles emerging from a couple of pots.

Just don't get too close to the tentacles, or you may end up as stock

There's another as yet unfinished stall that I'm currently painting, which I'll show you all when it's finished.

Whilst I'm here, I thought I'd introduce another denizen of the Port that I've recently painted, the notorious renegade Mechanicus Scientist known only as 'Tanglegenes'. He's currently holed up in an old, dilapidated Manifactorium building on the outskirts of the Port, and who knows what strange experiments he's currently engaged in...

It's astounding... Time is... fleeting. Madness... takes its toll. But listen closely... I've got to... keep... control.

This is a 40k update of the old 'Tanglebones' figure from Citadel's Eternal Champion range. It's blatantly based on Richard O'Brien as Riff Raff in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and it's really one of my all-time favourite Citadel figures. I've added some goggles, an old Eldar Power Fist, and a gun and chest piece from the Skitarii Rangers. He's been sat on my painting desk for a long time, and I've been meaning to paint him up as he was, for use in Mordheim, but inspiration (and the scalpel!) struck, and he went in a different direction.

Now all I need to do is find another one so I can paint up a non-modified version for Mordheim as I originally planned!

Space Slann! The Archaeo-Expeditionary Force of Mage-Chief Nohoch-Mul...

Sorry for the lack of posts recently, but I was in a painting mood, so finally managed to plow on and get my Space Slann army to a state of almost completion, and I think that merits a big ol' post!

The force on parade...

More Interstellar Amphibians after the cut...

Background

So, firstly, some background on my Slann. I've decided that they're a small, long-range expeditionary force, who have arrived at the edge of Imperium space and are now flitting between planets, searching for ancient sites containing artifacts from their distant past, on planets long-since abandoned by their Slann ancestors. (Slanncestors?)

Their usual tactic is that their main ship stays in orbit whilst they send down a transport ship with a diplomatic team (along with a small bodyguard retinue) to attempt to deal with the locals in a peaceful manner. Being so far from their spawning planet, their supplies are starting to dwindle, and they frequently trade with planets for goods, weapons and other more arcane artifacts.

If trade fails, or if the Slann find their ancient sites have been desecrated, the diplomatic team returns to the main ship and a larger, more heavily armed force will descend on the planet to collect whatever artifacts they can obtain. If their sensors detect taints of chaos on the surface, they will however forgo the first step and perform a massive pre-emptive strike, occasionally virus bombing the entire planet from orbit and then picking over the remains.

Organisation

The Slann are a Caste based race, with the vast majority of Slann being a plain greeny-yellow colour, making up most of the various warrior and working castes. More exotically coloured or patterned Slann are usually found in positions of power, and the rarer the colour, the more likely they are to exhibit psychic powers.

The Force

Mage-Chief Nohoch-Mul

Mage-Chief Nohoch-Mul

He's not actually converted at all, and probably still available from GW, but is a really nice model and makes a great centrepiece to the army.

Diplomatic Team K'Ulaj

L-R: Head Accountant S'Nclar, Lobotomised Human Banner Bearer, High Lord Ge'Za, unnamed attendant with Fan and Chief Negotiator A'Kaz.

These are the first Slann to land on a planet's surface and attempt to deal with the natives, offering to trade in exchange for goods and the rights to conduct archaeological excavations. As you can see, their colouring shows them to be of higher castes, with Ge'za's very rare light blue showing him to be of a very high Caste indeed.

Model-wise, these are Space Slann Huvez, a converted WFB lobotomised human slave with a banner made of one of Diehard miniatures shields, An excellent Colony 87 Space Frog, a fan bearer from the old Slann Palanquin, and a converted WFB Slann blowpipe warrior with a gun and RT scanner.

If negotiations fail for whatever reason, then jurisdiction is passed over to the War Chief, Q'Alel, who lands with his retinue and as many warriors as are needed. Q'Alel is accompanied by the two highest ranking Warrior Priests on the expedition, who act as massively powerful psychic warriors to augment Q'Alel's not inconsiderable own powers. He also has two bodyguards to help provide more mundane defence when needed.

Model-wise, these are two lightly converted WFB Slann Priests, the bodyguards are again converted WFB Slann models, with Q'Alel being Space Slann Quinletz

Individual shots:

 War Chief Q'Alel

Bodyguards

 Warrior Priest Chu-Kajaw

Warrior Priest Teox'Ibal

Scout Squad, Clan Riq

These are trailfinders, and scout ahead of the main army in order to map out the enemy's defences and find weak points. They are hardened warriors armed with a varied array of captured trophy weapons, and can easily silence any sentries they may come across, helped by their chameleon-like abilities that enable them to hide when needed.

Model-wise, these are all converted WFB Slann models with a selection of 40k weapons.

Ancient Armour Kanoq Ojin pattern

The Kanoq Ojin is a truly ancient piece of Slann weaponry, possessing the immortal soul of a great Slann warrior encased in a near-indestructible robotic armour suit bristling with weaponry.

Model-wise, This is an old Void War robot I've made up to use as a Dreadnought Proxy with a bunch of GW Lizardman kit parts and some Terminator Lightning Claws.

Attack Squad, Clan Elam'Aq

Elam'Aq are a veteran Clan who take pride in capturing the weapons of their enemies and using them. Currently they can be seen sporting a selection of Dark Eldar weapons captured from a pirate band they recently eliminated.

Model-wise, again these are converted WFB Slann models with Dark Eldar weapons.

Warrior Team, Clan Ak'koj

 Front View

 Rear View

Clan Koj, identifiable by their R'fftavian Mountain Tiger pelts are a standard warrior team, and armed with a Grenade Launcher.

Model-wise, because there are basically only two trooper variants in the Space Slann range, Llamas and Sschoi (Olassa and Scoitz are tiny so I put them in a separate unit, and the rest are all personalities!) I've had to be a bit inventive with making squads. I've converted one trooper from each squad to be a heavy weapon trooper, and used an individual personality model as the squad leader. Because colour is so important to the Slann, I've differentiated units by the animal fur that they wear as pelts, with the rest being fairly standard apart from some mottling of skin tones etc.

Warrior Team, Clan Kiq

 Front view

Rear view

This Clan are identified by the Red and orange fur of the Puch'u'm Re'pix, an incredibly rare and dangerous hairy lizard, and the heavy weapon trooper has a Heavy Plasma Gun.

Warrior Team, Clan Q'aq Juyub

 Front view

 Rear view

This clan wear the pale, mottled fur of the Mixaqaqan Tree Lion, and their special weapon Trooper is armed with a Multi-melta.

Juvenile Team, Clan Itzel Ak'al

  Front view

 Rear view

These are young Slann wanting to prove themselves in battle and move on from the 'training' Clan Itzel Ak'al into one of the 'full' warrior Clans. They have two special weapons troopers, one with a Missile Launcher, and the other with a Shotgun.

Animal Handler Toq'omel

Utilising huge warhounds from the Deathworld Lustri-4, the handler can rip apart enemy units with ease.

Model-wise this is just the C22 Slann animal handler set with a modified arm to add a weapon.

Skink Suicide Squads

These were just a little experiment I did to provide some variation and add in some more races to the Slann army. I did these and some lizardmen conversions, but have only got the Skinks painted. My initial thought was to use these as suicide attackers, possibly with the occasional bomb pack involved...

Further notes on Space Slann...

I've basically spent about 12 years in total, on and off, collecting Space Slann models, specifically targeting rank and file models to actually make up an army. As you can see, there were actually only 12 models released, (although there was at least one unreleased model, and rumours of several more.) Of these, only 4 were rank and file, and the rest were characters. Of those 4 rank and file models, 2 were near-unusable as they were practically identical and tiny compared to the other ten models in the range. I've actually utilised them as juveniles in the army as they just looked daft mixed in with the other units. I'd dearly love to get some more models sculpted that fit into the range, just to bulk out a long-forgotten 40k range that I really love.

Anyway, there you go, the results of a very long journey. I've a few extra bits to complete, including another dreadnought suit, some artillery and a spaceship, which I'll put up in the near future.

Have another group shot for posterity:

The Old Main Drag...

Well, I finally got around to making up some baseboards for Port Imperiale, so I thought I'd do a few photos. No real reason or game involved, just fancied setting up some models, so here you go...

Overview of the Port

A shot down the main street, with Tanglegene's Manufactorium in the distance.

And again. Droids and local workers can be seen going about their business.

Looking out from the roof of Lucky's Bar, over the market.

A Slann trading delegation, attempting to get a good deal from the rather irate owner owner of Guns 'N' Ammo.

Alternate view.

Another view of the market, Lucky's Bar in the background.

An angry customer remonstrates with Li H'Sen Chang, owner of Robo-Crap, regarding a faulty RoboButler.

And again, different angle.

A higher view over the market.

A delegation from the Jamakeer Mining Corporation heads over to check on their mine.

The mine itself, permanently under heavy guard by JMC employees.

The EVH Salvage Head office, with employees heading out on their lunch break.

The heavily guarded entrance gate.

Renegade Mechanicus scientist, Tanglegenes, seen here on the balcony of his dilapidated Manufactorium building.

And just who might this shifty character be, heading into Lucky's Bar? Obviously not someone tempted by offers of cheap soup from a hooded food seller.

Enjoy!

Post Surgery Update

Just a very brief post to let you all know that I've now had the spinal discectomy/fusion surgery I needed, and it appeared to go well. I've no longer got pins and needles in my left arm for a start, which is always helpful. I do, however feel like I've been kicked by a horse and am on a lot of morphine, so I'm unable to work on anything at the moment.

I'll hopefully update again when I'm in more productive form!

HIL Sector's Finest, AKA Port Imperiale's Arbites Station

So, I'm still not really up to painting, but I can at least get around to photographing a few pieces I finished before surgery.

This is the station I made for my Arbites Squad. Long since cut off from the Imperium, they are totally isolated and operate mainly in a low-key police role, picking up the *really* bad criminals that rise to the top of the pile of scum that makes up Port Imperiale.

A rare group shot in front of their HQ.

And a more regular shot, guarding the building from the roof, with a couple of Arbites about to head out on a patrol.

I'll hopefully get a few more shots up of a some other bits I've done in the next few days.

So, here's another couple of models I finished a while ago but haven't really photographed properly yet...
Tanglegenes and his (not so) little helper...

Tanglegenes, the renegade Mechanicus Scientist has been pictured briefly in previous posts, but, as befits his mysterious reputation, he was usually in the distance, or in imperfect light conditions. Now here are a couple of better shots...

Well, here you go, I finally finished the 'Maelstrom' Class cruiser and my word, it's a biggie...

In fact it's not just a biggie, it's positively huge, coming in at just over 20 inches long! It's by far the largest 40k model I've ever made. There's a load more photos after the cut, if you're so inclined...

After the last couple of posts on here, quite a few people now have asked me for more info about the transfers I've recently made, so I thought I'd get around to actually doing a bit of a DIY Guide before I forgot what I did!

Yet another post in the ongoing decal-related series, this time featuring a large Arbites armoured transport I finished recently.

I nicknamed this one 'The Blue Turd' as it is, quite honestly, an absolutely terrible model.

More photos, and an explanation after the cut...
